Auto Insurance

The following outline of coverage is for information purposes only.  These descriptions are subject to terms and conditions of the policy contract used in Florida.  This outline does not change any of the provisions of the insurance contract. Please refer to your Declaration Pages for actual coverages.

Auto insurance can sometimes appear to be complex and many people are underinsured. Below are some of the standard definitions for coverages.

BODILY INJURY LIABILITY

Pays for bodily injury or death resulting from an automobile accident for which you are legally liable. Pays up to the first limit for injury or death of any one person and, subject to the first limit for one person, up to the second limit for all persons injured or killed. Also provides you with a defense in the event you are sued for damages as a result of a covered accident. This coverage can provide essential protection against loss of home, savings, and income if you become involved in an accident.

PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY

Pays when you are legally liable for damage to the property of others caused by your vehicle. Pays for damage up to the limit selected plus the cost of any suit. A minimum limit of $10,000 must be selected.  Higher limits are available.

PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION

Regardless of who is at fault for the accident, this coverage pays up to 80% of all necessary, reasonable and related medical expenses, 60% of loss of earnings, 100% of replacement services expenses, and death benefits up to $5,000 for the named insured (includes resident spouse) and resident relatives. Also covers passengers of the covered auto who do not carry their own PIP and are not required to carry their own PIP.  The limit is $10,000 per person, per accident. Full coverage is recommended, but various deductibles and options are available.

MEDICAL PAYMENTS

Pays necessary, reasonable and related medical expenses for the named insured (includes resident spouse) and resident relatives injured in a motor vehicle accident. Also covers passengers of the insured motor vehicle if: (1) the accident occurs in the state of Florida and (2) the passengers do not have his/her own PIP and is not required to have their own PIP. Also covers pedestrians who are injured when struck by the insured motor vehicle, if the pedestrian: (1) is a Florida resident and (2) does not have his/her own PIP and is not required to have his/her own PIP. Up to limit selected, this coverage pays the coinsurance portion (20%) of a medical expenses claim under PIP. It also pays up to the selected limit if PIP coverage has been exhausted. This coverage may not be used to satisfy any deductible selected under PIP coverage and does not apply to loss of earnings.
